99 Book:
I exhibited a piece entitled 99 Bottles; Their Caps on the Wall back in 2009/2010 at a solo exhibition at Eye Lounge, “Chaos Theory” at Legend City Studios, and “The Arizona Biennial” at The Tucson Museum of Art. Since then I’ve been working on a proto-type / mock up book design inspired by the piece… Entitled “99” the book version allows one to experience each bottle cap independently (page to page). Although I have created artist books before and have enjoyed the process very much, I have never started with a printed piece on a wall and translated it into a book form later on. The experience of a viewer, as well as myself, is far different than through the presentation of the original print. I’ve always been fascinated by the way viewing photographs in book form is transformed and altered, as if it becomes more honest through a slower and more tactful way of engagement. Initially intended to be a small run of self published artist books, “99” has become something that I imagine being a little bigger, maybe involving a series of prints to go with it. I am actively seeking out publication opportunities for this specific project and am still developing the details, text, and design. If anyone has any suggestions, ideas, or insights, please email me as I’d love to hear. I look forward to seeing how it will evolve. In the meantime here are some photos of the first proto-type book itself. (Currently just over 100 pages, including all 99 bottle caps. Ignore the edition of 10, there won’t be more books made exactly like this one.)
